Big Effects for the Little Guys.....

Hey There, my name is Brian Vowles and I’m a freelance Animation and VFX artist working in Toronto.

I’ve been working in production since 2002 and during that time I worked on various TV, Film and Web projects. In 2009, I decided to branch out and offer animation and visual effects services to small budget productions all over North America. With past clients in Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Miami, the internet is making long distance collaborations surprisingly simple.

So take a look around and if you think I can help you out, lemme know.

Take care.

Bri

The site was built by by Cartilage in Toronto and I was brought on as the 3D guy. I had to build a glass building with an exterior, a kitchen, lobby, elevator, doctors office, and classroom. Once they were done I had to render them out and provide them with the images that they plugged into the site. I also had to do the camera animations that transitioned between the various parts of the site.

It was cool to be working on a web project for a change. Check out the site to see how it all came together.....

www.nunuclear.com

It had a whole VFX component and a web component as well. The premise was to have an interactive website that showed the point of view of a baby in the whom. As the new song plays, a series of uncomfortable images flash all over the walls....... the song is broken down into a bunch of little sections and each is one interactive.

My job was to model, rig, animate the “baby” that we see at the end of the spot. As a consequence of the things he has witnessed through out the song, his development has taken some awkward turns.

Here is a link to the site, if you want to see the baby stuff, it’s in the last section of the song

www.aliceinchains.com/acidbubble/

All films have to be only three minutes long and they all have to use the same dialogue.

What is that?
It’s a unicorn?
I’ve never seen one up close before.
Beautiful.
Get away, Get Away
I’m Sorry.

In early July I was contacted by a Vancouver Filmmaker named Richard Simpson. He had been an Art director for years and was now making the jump to directing. He also wrote the script.

I wasn’t sure if i would be able to deliver the effects he needed with such a short schedule but the initial tests went really well and they gave everyone on board the confidence to go for it.

Everyone involved was awesome..... and I think it shows.

Each week the viewer is shown how to defend themselves in everyday situations.

A hold up at a bank machine, a fight in a bar, or home invasion. The cool thing about the show is that you don’t need to be a ninja to use the information. It was designed to give everyday people a way out.

I was brought on to do some stylized x-ray animations. Basically, I had to illustrate what happens internally when you kick the crap out of someone...or.... someone does it to you.

The show was produced by Pyman Media Group and is currently airing on MenTV.

www.citycommando.com

www.pyman.com

Over 200, 000 people were killed and those who survived found themselves with nowhere to go. It’s estimated that the event created over one million homeless. “Tent Cities” popped up all over the country, but clearly a long term solution to the massive housing shortage was needed.

Shortly after the event I was contacted by a local entrepreneur named Christopher Munroe. He had set the ball rolling on a very ambitions plan to provide, clean, durable, and long term housing for the people of Haiti.

It’s called “The Lazarus Project”.

TLP is a non-profit organization working with experts from from all over the world. Together, they are developing a system of not only housing, but social programs aimed at lifting the morale of communities effected by natural disasters. While Haiti is the focus at the moment, TLP’s long term strategy is to provide their services to disaster victims all over the world.

This video was created as a proof of concept for potential investors. It was a good way to illustrate what the new communities will look like.

I really hope this video can do it’s part.

www.thelazaproject.org

It was the story of a luger that has a reoccurring nightmare of waking up in a luge run, naked, having his junk freeze to the ice and rip off...... (see home page)....... So naturally when Lynne contacted me in the fall, with a new idea for another short, I was all over it.

Lynne received a grant from CODE, which is part of the Olympics in Vancouver 2010. They will be showcasing short films from 20 Canadian filmmakers. I thought it was a “Ma and Pop shop” so I was a little surprised when I found out they have “128 stores in 11 States.

The first spot went really well and we ended up getting two more...... as soon as I track them down I’ll post them.

www.hhgregg.com

Toshiba Machine makes crazy huge milling machines. In October they had a trade show in Toronto and were revealing the newest addition to their line, the TUE-200s.

The plan was to have the new machine transform at the trade show on big monitors, and proceed to tell the audience about all his new features. The presentation is about four minutes long but I have just a mall sample here.

All of the designs were done by their in house 2D artist but they wanted a blend of 2D and 3D for the finals. At first I thought it was a weird idea but it turned out surprisingly well.......... I think I’ll use this approach down the road on one of my own projects.

Back in February I got the job to do 130 shots for the film. It’s rare in my business to hear a director say.....

If there is ever any doubt in which way the effects should go, always go for what looks cheesiest......... we’re aiming for cheese.

So with that in mind I got started........ Iron Mask is in the final stages of post production and will be hitting the festivals in September. It’s going to be awesome.......... bring the kids............ actually.............. you should probably leave them home.
